We interviewed two of our remarkable artisans who have dedicated their lives to the craft. Their stories inspire us to do better and create better.
Interview 1: Priya Khujur
Artisan Priya Khujur, from Chattisgarh, is a 25 year old weaver, part of the Kalinkaari family. She started weaving along with her parents and still continues to do so.
Q: How long have you been in this profession? Since when have you been weaving carpets?
A: It’s been five to six years since I have been weaving carpets. I started learning from a young age, seeing my parents do the same and picked it up quickly.
Q. Why did you start weaving?
A: I didn’t want to sit idle at home, adding to the financial burden on my parents. So I come to the weaving site to help out wherever I can in the process of making carpets.
Q. What do you do as a weaver?
A: I do thread looming, carpet looming and carpet weaving. I also use the hammer to keep the threads taut while weaving.
Q. Any challenges you face while working or as a weaver?
A: No, I don’t really face challenges here. There are residential facilities and potable water is accessible. Everything I need is there, so I don’t face any difficulties and can focus on my craft.
Q. Do you miss home? Do you visit often?
A. Yes, I do miss home. I go home once every one or two years. I stay in my village for one or two months and then come back refreshed.
Despite the hurdles, her commitment to weave beautiful carpets remains unwavering. She takes pride in seeing the finished work.

Interview 2: Natima Begum
Natima Begum, a resident of Jharkhand, is a 40 year old ‘Kaleen’ (weaver). Her children are her motivation. The desire to enable them to study pushes her to create beautiful carpets. She enjoys the process as well.
Q: Since how long have you been weaving?
A: It has been around 20-25 years now.
Q: How long do you intend to continue weaving?
A: As long as my eyes work and hands weave, I will continue. Being a worker, I have to keep working until I can, otherwise there won’t be food on my table. I highly respect my job and like working here. I strive to do my best.
Q: How often do you visit home?
A: I go home once every 6 months. I stay for two to four months and then come back to weave.
Q: Are you happy working here?
A: Yes, very much. I don’t think I need to look for another job. All facilities have been provided- water, living quarters and bathrooms. This keeps me happy. Plus my work gives me satisfaction and I get paid decently, so I am really happy.
